Plywood Collage
3D plywood collage for Terme Tuhelj, a thermal water pool and spa complex.

How it started…
Terme Tuhelj, a Iarge thermal water complex in Croatia, was undergoing a major renovation and I was comisioned to make a wall installation for a newly-built relaxation space adjacent to the swimming pool.
The wall in question is 16 m long and 2.8 m high, so as I’ve never made anything that big, the project came with a big dose of responsibility and an (un) healthy amount of respect for the unknown. There’s a first time for everything, right?

Working on something new and different means acquiring a few skills along the way. The skill of the day was using a paint spray gun.

The space is elongated, with a short black ceiling and dark grey tiles on the walls and the floor, so my idea was to make a birch plywood installation for a touch of visual warmth.

I decided on botanical shapes to try and “transplant” a part of the vegetation and colours surrounding the complex to its interior.

The resulting 3D collage contains branches, flowers, mushrooms and resembles a super-sized dream-like botanical landscape befitting a space dedicated to relaxation.
